I just got back from an incredible trip to California with stops in San Francisco, Monterey, Yosemite, Berkley, and more with my amazing parents! It was so inspiring. Everything from the Ed Rushca and the American West exhibit at the deYoung Museum, to the Typeface to Interface exhibit at SFMoMA, to a vintage 7up sign, was a visual delight.
My absolute favorite experience was getting to spend an evening at the Letterform Archive looking over their incredible collection. We got to see (and touch!) everything from an ancient Cuneiform tablet to an original Futura type specimen. I scarcely know where to start, other than to recommend that it is something you need to see for yourself. I'm also looking forward to a variety of publications they have forthcoming!
Christine Herrin was also kind enough to show me around some of her favorite spots one afternoon! Coffee at The Mill, design drool at Rare Device and The Perish Trust, a comic book stop at Comix Experience, and some vintage lettering goodness at Cookin' (which is so cool it doesn't even have a website!?!?!?!). I am so grateful for her time and our lovely conversation! Yay for internet friends :D Now for me to show her around Charleston :P
Other highlights were a drive along Route 1, Point Reyes National Seashore (!!!!!!), Muir Woods, Napa Valley, and a bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge. Till next time!
